The purpose of this project is to improve safety, increase capacity and decrease congestion. In 2015, the NDOT Safety Committee identified the 72nd Street and Maple Street intersection as a high crash location. After review of the collision diagram, a pattern of eastbound left-turn crashes was identified, and the Committee suggested modifying the intersection.
The planned improvements to the intersection include construction of dual left-turn lanes on Maple Street at the intersection. The project would start east of N 75th Street and extend to just west of N 69th Street. Along 72nd Street, the project would extend from approximately Corby to Binney Streets and would reconstruct the medians. No wetland impacts are anticipated as part of this project. Additional improvements are planned to include new traffic signals, lighting, sidewalk, driveways, and storm sewer. Construction is planned to start in Spring of 2020 with completion the same year.
The proposed project would require the acquisition of additional right-of-way (ROW) and temporary construction easements throughout the project area. Right-of-way activities are tentatively planned to begin in 2019. Access to adjacent properties would be maintained during construction but may be limited at times due to phasing requirements. A marked detour is not planned.
